5-28-2009 Exploration

I was out again today exploring a new found tunnel. Said tunnel is part of a water drainage system, and the entire length was probably around a half of a mile. The tunnel was divided into approximately fourteen 100 yd sections, each of which was separated by a small access area for maintenance personell. The tunnels themselves were probably around 5 ft high at the highest, so I was forced to bend over double and when I awoke after my nap this afternoon my thighs were terribly sore. It was quite the workout!

Urban Spelunking

So recently I’ve been into what i’ve dubbed “Urban Spelunking”. Where I’m at, there are a lot of water drains that are easily assescible by people on foot, and I’ve explored some with friends that go for miles underground. Thiry yards underground, with the sweat from the hot steam pipes you are inches away from rolling down your back, you can smell the algae and rust underfoot. With the light of your flashlight, we could imagine people our age a millenia ago doing the same thing with nothing more than a torch and a cave. It’s surreal when you’re under there. Regardless of the outside temperature, the tunnels and pipes are refreshingly cool and the grain of the concrete is reassuring under your fingertips.Here are some pics:

I thought these tunnels were very cool, and I intend to continue exploring them in my free time. A note to those of you reading this, I think these would be a decent place to hide in the event of an emergency. Best of luck!

Rooftop Legends 2009 (NDHS Rooftop)

Last night I went to the opening of Rooftop Legends 2009 on the rooftop of New Design High School at 350 Grand in the city. Greeted by the grill and smell of fresh paint, I was blasted with the sheer number of pieces that had been done inside the space. There were probably five pieces in progress with people still working on them, surrounded by the other hundred or so that had already been done. It was dope.

The space itself was, need I say?, unique. NDHS had a decent skatepark set up on the roof and the artists had written all over the street course as well. I took hundreds of pictures, and my favorites were these:

Torture

Is it right? Not exactly. Is it wrong? Again, not exactly. Is it necessary? Damned right it is. I go to a fairly liberal prep-school and when these pictures first surfaced in the Sydney Morning Herald a couple of years ago, everyone was shocked and disgraced of their government; but I say this: Do you people really think anyone will fear America as long as all we do is jail and lethally inject them? Really? Terrorists and others who want nothing more than to kill American citizens, American women and children, should view these pictures as a warning. This is what happens to you when we catch you. This is what happens if you fuck with America. It’s not pretty. It’s not something we want or need to see, but it is stuff like this that makes your life possible. It’s torture that keeps terrorists from killing you, and it’s the blood of these same terrorists that is necessary to nurish the coddled lifestyle that so many Americans are used to. Is it right? No. Is it a fact? Yes.

Change of Name

Instead of writing as RhetteInjyun, I think from now on i’m going to stick to just Rhette. I’ve been researching a lot of different writers and styles, and I haven’t seen anything much longer than one word being very successful. From now on I’m completely my alter-ego.

I wrote my first graffiti with spray paint yesterday and today! Writing as RhetteInjyun, I’ve been focusing on the underside of overpasses on the small suburban highways in and around Woodbury, CT. I’ve been using simple, cheap spraypaint that I bought from Wal-Mart for 99¢ each, and I’ve run into the problem of my white being insufficiently flat to cover anything in the background. The graffiti is presented in chronological order of my doing them (The 1st being my 1st, 2nd my 2nd, etc…), the 1st being my least favorite, the 2nd being my 3rd favorite, the 3rd being my favorite and the 4th being my second favor.
